City Road Safety Solutions

Types of safety risks encountered on city roads
• Road hazards at junctions: Road safety issues at junctions are primarily caused by poor visibility of oncoming traffic and insufficient signs to indicate pedestrian crossings.
• Lack of visibility for public transportation lanes: Lack of cautionary signs and lane demarcation for bus lanes can cause collisions when changing lanes.
• Visual clutter and light pollution: These hazards are visually distracting and can affect the safety of the motorists on roads.

Mitigation Measures & Road Safety Solutions
• Cautionary/Warning, Informatory/Guide, Mandatory/Regulatory signs with retroreflective sheeting (Class B, Type IV) along the side of the road to allow drivers time to anticipate the traffic conditions ahead (IRC67: 2012).
• Hazard markers should be installed around the roundabout to caution traffic (IRC79).
• Raised Pavement Markers (RPMs) and Solar Studs to be placed on the road around the roundabout for better road visibility (IRC35:2015).

• Cautionary/Warning and Directional traffic signs (Class B, Type IV) along the side of the road to allow drivers time to anticipate the traffic direction changes ahead (IRC67: 2012).
• RPMs in red should be placed along the edge of the Y-Junction and channelising islands to mark the road for better visibility at night (IRC35:2015).
